Lenticular Stairs

Image out of sketchbook #1 from Buy My Sketchbook
While I was busy looking a stairs the other day, I was thinking about how it might be possible to display two images on them.
Much like those fancy baseball cards, cracker jack prizes and limited edition cereal boxes, I would imagine the stairs might work pretty well on a much larger scale.
Lenticulars?
I’m certain I’ll have to test this theory out soon. I think that chalk might work well before I go about creating some big stencils. Once the images are painted on the stairs, you should be able to go up and down and notice a variation in the image.
If my tests work out, I’ll be posting a new instructable up about how to make your own. Or if someone out there has an urge to try this out, please let me know, I would love to see it in action, or at least a detailed first hand experience would be nice.

They advertise on the back of stairs in train stations this way (in the UK) just so you can see the advert as you ascend but not in a lenticular style. Now faking perspective like they do on football pitches, I think that’s brilliant. Patent it quick! This is a Million Dollar Idea dude.
I had coffee with my friend Meredith today, while flipping through my sketchbook for sale, she said she saw some stairs thing like at http://www.woostercollective.com/
I was like dang….
but then I looked and they didn’t do the lenticular thing. After seeing the images though, I think it’s possible to pull off.
I enjoy browsing this website. Cool sketches, too. They’re very inspiring (I’m an aspiring doodler, if there is such a thing).
ohhhhh i see what youre up to there….
cool idea drew.
only problem is the tops of the stairs wouldnt last very long before they got super dirty and lost the effect.
Itd be fun street art tho!
They used to do this at the college I went to to advertise student elections etc. They would just use chalk on a huge, wide set of stairs (approx.30 rise/run). Since they would usually just chalk the rise, it would stay clean for a long time, and since it was in the southwest, it took a long time to wash away. It was usually just words, but art/pictures would be nice to see.
