Last June, I moved from Portland to Brooklyn with my girlfriend. Despite the relationship not working out, I’m still in Brooklyn. In a few hours, I’ll be on a flight back to Oregon for the first time since I left.
My 6:00AM flight leaves me no time to sleep. I’ve already had a couple of sleepless nights this week and I should probably head to the airport around 4:00AM anyhow. So, I’ve been eager to write. Brooklyn has not been good on my blog and while ideas have not stopped flowing, time to write about them has.
I miss Portland a lot, as it offers me things that NY never can. It’s an odd feeling to be in a place so long and still feel like something very important is missing. I’m going to stick around until I figure it out I think. I see the potential in this place and I’m trying to figure out my part here. I feel like it can happen.

Anyhow. I’ve been slacking on the blog and a lot of you have been hounding me about it. Twitter, seems to fit with the ADD world of internet users and blogs have taken their hit. I plan on starting a personal blog soon as I generally try to steer clear of getting too personal on MoHDI and it’s time to have a depository for that personal (yet public) stuff going on in my life.

So.. Portland.
CFF is going to be battling it out with other Portland Pinball gangs. Come down to Ground Kontrol on Sunday and partake in the Pinbrawl. It’s going to be a blast to check out. I’ll be out Saturday night trying to get fresh with the tables.

It’s late, I’ve had so little sleep this week it’s crazy and I feel like I can’t write worth a pile of beans. I’m excited for my trip but despising the traveling. I’ve got some awesome things cooking and someday I’ll be able to put the time back into MoHDI.

In the mean time, you can find me on twitter and flickr to see what I’m up to.
ON Gallery opens in the Everett Station Lofts with “Departure”:
illustration, large format videography and video conference by artist
Drew Anderson.

About “Departure”

Oregon artist Drew Anderson shows a vast body of his work in his
Departure show. A long time resident, Drew has shown throughout
Portland for the past decade. Here we showcase a variety of his recent
work, from intricate weaves of ink on both paper and antique cabinet
cards, to original block cuts.

A new series entitled Buy My Sketchbook
(http://www.buymysketchbook.com), which has recently been on display
in London and Tokyo, will be viewed as a large-scale projection.

Despite his recent move to Brooklyn NY, the artist will be present
virtually via video conference, and ready to answer any questions.

This show will be an exciting exploration of imagination and whimsy,
and may be the last we see of this artist for some time.

Sunday, Portland was fortunate to have some decent weather although some would say it might be a little hot others would say it was much needed and a great day to join about 75,000 other people to listen to Barack Obama speak on the waterfront.
My plan initially was to go down there wait in line and see him speak. After a bit of reality kicked in I decided that it would be best to stay home mainly for 2 reasons. First, I hate waiting in line and second I don’t particularly like large crowds either. Rebecca changed my mind with a phone call at about 2:00 telling me about some massive lines and about the people selling all sorts of stuff from Obama shirts to frozen goods.
I didn’t really want to miss out on this opportunity and I wanted a good excuse to leave the house. The first step was to borrow a cooler. My roommate who was out of town over the weekend just so happened to leave one out for me, I took the liberty of using it. The next step was a trip to my favorite store Fred Meyer. The 2 for $3 sale on popsicles was pretty good and I was fortunate this day there were still about 5 bags of those left and a handful of other cheap frozen treats. I spent about $13 on frozen goods to sell and $1.29 on a bag of ice for the cooler. I had 114 popsicles in my cooler and my plan was to try to get a buck a piece for them.
I suppose part of the cost was the $1.75 for the bus there and the $1.75 for the bus back so all together I spent $17.79 on this venture.

So packed with a backpack cooler, I hit the waterfront. After a scope of the crowds and area, I found a nice bench in the shade where I sat and said the word “popsicles” to passers by. I didn’t want to be too exposed as I’m not totally sure what the laws are on selling stuff out of a cooler backpack. I was asking $1 each for them although if people didn’t have the money or if it was someone that was less fortunate or seemed nice or was some cute kid or just looked like they needed a frozen goody, I would just give them one. I came home and had a grand total of $28.50 from sales. $28.50 – $17.79 = $10.71. That’s not too bad for 3 hours worth of work. I probably gave away about as many popsicles as I sold and I probably ate about 7 or 8 myself.

It was great to be that close to the Obama energy, I even caught a brief glimpse of him as he left the stage.

I learned a lot from this little experiment. I think next time I might just give out popsicles to promote this site.

It’s late and I could write a bunch more about this stuff although. I think I should go to bed for now.

My fellow Oregon voters, don’t forget to drop off your ballot today before 8:00PM!

Vote.

A recent computer problem has been one of a few small hurdles that the MoHDI staff has had to deal with recently. After much strategic thought and planning it has come down to the core tactics of survival in order to allow seeds to grow.

With rent and bills over due, it’s time to figure out how not to lose the place I’m living in and how to manage to keep a roof over the head and food in the tummy long enough for one or more of these pursuits to pay off and for the proper financial guidance that seems so desperately needed from time to time.

Currently my first order of business is to pay rent and bills that will allow me to keep a place to live.
Since rent was due like a couple days ago and crucial utilities can not be shut off, it’s time to take some steps to maintain my non-homeless lifestyle that I have become so comfortable with.

Here is where you can help.

I’m selling my car.
If you know of anyone looking please let me know.

The Car
1986 240 Volvo Sedan, it’s a manual transmission with 161k miles on it.
There are a few dents in it but it’s a good car. It needs new tags and brake pads. The stick is a little loose but once you are used to it it’s fine. I’m asking $1110 but this is negotiable as I need to have sold it like a while ago.
Selling the car will pretty much help MoHDI and staff operate for another month and hopefully be enough time to finish some projects that will actually pay.

If you are not in the market for a car, I’ve got tons of original art for sale.
If you click on the photo you will be taken to my Flickr page and can see some of the pieces I’ve been working on. All of the cabinet cards are priced resonably at $50 each and if you are interested in any other art, I have stacks of both framed and unframed pieces at a variety of prices.

Other Projects move forward
In July of 2007 I started a sketchbook that when finished would be sold to the person who had the best offer for the finished book. Well last week I finished the first in the series for Buy My Sketchbook
While the press releases have yet to be released you can see all pages of the book at buymysketchbook.com
The current best offer is from my Mom and she is offering me $200 plus a nice dinner. I hope with a little bit of exposure on the project I’ll be able to fetch a bit more for the first book in the series. There was after all a ton of time that went into this book.

I’ve already started book two in the series. I hope to get the process down to about a month a book.
Below is a sneek peek at Sketchbook #2 for BuyMySketchbook.com.

Lots more ideas are coming, It’s just hard to get things posted while in survival mode.

I guess it might be time to look for an actual job one of these days. In case you are wondering, my submission to WK for the seeking project they had was either not what they where looking for or perhaps when they asked for my resume, I should have actually sent them it. Either way, I didnt’ get accepted into that program although I still think it would be a fun place to work. Considering my financial situation I’d be willing to work there even if my office had a poor view of the city and I only had one assistant.

I’ve had a boatload of ideas and inventions to post in the past few weeks, I hope to be getting more up on the site once the current situation with money is resolved.

Feel free to comment or contact me if you would be interested in a car, art or a sketchbook.
(my contact info is on the sidebar of this site)

Hundred Dollar Ideas are just Ideas that make a little money.

If you want to make a comment at an establishment you go into there is probably no better way than filling out a comment and putting it in a comment box. If that business does not have a comment box, why not bring one of your own. The Comment Box, is a box you can set up anyplace you want to make a comment about something.

Recently I was telling a friend about an experience I had at the Bagdad theater in Portland.

Basically I went to see a movie with a friend, the movie was supposed to start at 7:30 PM. Since it was a Friday, I was sure to show up and be in line a good 10 minutes before the movie would start. By the time we entered the theater the movie had actually started. This pretty much upset me, I missed about 5 minutes of the movie as they actually started the movie right at 7:30 despite a good 10 minutes of people in line. So I was basically complaining about how they probably shouldn’t start the movie until at least the people who showed up and had been waiting in line before 7:30 had a chance to get into the theater.

So I was telling my friend Scarlett about this and telling how I should write a letter or something. She told me one of her brilliant ideas she came up with while having a bad eating experience where the place she was eating at had replaced metal forks with plastic ones.

Since the place she was eating at didn’t have a comment box, her idea was to make a comment box then bring it in, fill out a comment and leave the comment and comment box. Brilliant I think.

So you can easily get your message heard as well open up a forum of communication with customers and business. By delivering a comment box into an establishment, you are providing a wonderful service to everyone involved.

Hey Portlanders, you have till Tuesday the 15th to get your proposals into Ignite Portland.http://www.igniteportland.com.

I sent in a proposal a while ago. I probably wrote the thing sometime around 3 in the morning so, I’m not too sure if it sounded coherent or not. You can read all the proposals and submit your own if you would like at the Ignite Portland site. If you are passionate about anything at all and would like to share that passion, you should submit.

[If you have a great proposal and need help putting a presentation together, please don't hesitate to ask. I'll gladly help you implement your idea into presentation form for this]

The first event was amazing and the upcoming 2nd Ignite event should not be missed!

I hope to be presenting this time, if not, I hope one of you will. It would be great to see the proposal board explode with entries. I certainly can’t wait till the event.

One of my many drawings from the evening

For a while I had thought about taking some life drawing classes, even at the last CFF meeting the conversation came up about getting motivated to do some life drawings. It was always one of those things that I would eventually get around to.
Last night Jason (who happens to be an amazing artist/illustrator) had told me about the event and suggested I check it out. The idea of a burlesque style life drawing session sounds amazing although at the time, I wasn’t really feeling like doing anything, I guess that’s the sign when you actually need to go do something. After checking out the Portland Portland MySpace Page for Dr. Sketchy’s I was sold.

In Portland Dr. Sketchy’s is every Wednesday at Dante’s from 7-9 and cost $6.
There are over 40 Dr. Sketchy’s events around the World that operate similar to the one in Portland, so try to find one near you.

There was only a small crowd there and last night there where 2 female models. I guess most of the time they have a male and a female. Probably 15 artists showed up all with different skill levels. Glancing at some of the peoples work, I was amazed at how they could make something so good so quickly. It was my first time and I have to admit, I was a bit nervous. For some reason one of the models kept making direct eye contact with me ( I suppose everyone felt that way) I had to fight the laughter a little bit as a half naked model was almost trying to make my laugh by locking eyes. I was slightly intimidated too cause I didn’t really want her to see my drawing of her as I struggled along. Next time I go (most likely next week) I kind of know what to expect so, I don’t think I’ll be as nervous and shy about my art.

As far as my art skills go, I have a lot to learn and Dr. Sketchy’s was just what I needed.

Another of my drawings, most of my drawings looked like they had been done by a 12 year old boy after 5 cups of coffee.
